Another one to look at might be the HP Photosmart C30. It was the second cheapest one that was listed at the time. It's ratings were something I think like Good/Good/ok. You are stuck with only (I think) 20 pictures and the only way to transfer them is by USB. So no flash cards, no serial cable, just USB.

When it comes to scanners, it pays to treat specifications with a very large hunk of salt. What I have read about the Epson flatbed scanners when used for photography is that they sometimes aren't as sharp as people would like. No-one has ever criticized the Photosmart for producing blurry pictures.
